Half Day Introduction to Canoeing or Kayaking

There is nothing like messing about on the water!  Why not spend some time in a canoe or sit on top kayak and explore one of the many lakes or rivers in the Lake District? We can teach you how to paddle your canoe or kayak so you can start to explore. Canoeing and kayaking is great for families and friends and can be enjoyed by all, no matter what your ability. We can help you visit secluded bays, explore islands and see the area from a different angle.

We provide all you need to have a fun, safe time, including your own personal guide. Why not combine time canoeing or kayaking with stopping off to light a small fire and toast marshmallows? Or have a picnic of locally produced food or even a BBQ? Canoes can also be used as part of a journey or an overnight camp. So come and enjoy a half, full or multi-day canoe journey. Combine it with another activity such as rock climbing or ghyll scrambling to make a fun day out for you and your group.

Canoe the Middle River Derwent (Half Day)

This river joins Derwentwater to Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District. It is a great introduction to canoeing on rivers. The river offers few obstacles but has some nice shingle rapids and the odd tree hazard. The river passes through farmland with great views of the surrounding mountains making it a trip to remember. We start on Derwentwater where we get used to the canoes before entering the River Derwent. We even have time to stop for tea and cake at Nicol End Marina if you want. From there the river provides us with a great trip with fantastic views and the opportunity to stop from time to time to admire them. The trip ends just short of Bassenthwaite Lake with a short portage back to your car. So why not head down this great little gem and have an adventure?

Grade:

This trip is aimed at people with experience of canoeing on flat water. However, we make a day of it and learn some skills on Derwentwater in the morning and then paddle the river in the afternoon.

Cost for the full day trip with a skills session on Derwentwater in the morning:

2 people                    £160

Per extra person         £35

Discover Beatrix Potter’s Derwentwater by Canoe and Walk

Beatrix Potter spent some of her summers in the Keswick and Derwentwater area. Here she drew inspiration for Mr McGregor’s garden, Mrs Tiggywinkle and Squirrel Nutkin. Let Eden Outdoor Adventures take you on a journey to discover some of the places she visited and sketched for her famous children's books.

Canoe on Derwentwater and see views of Fawe Park and Lingholm, the houses Beatrix' family stayed in for holidays and the gardens she used as part of Mr McGregor’s world. Land on St Herbert’s Island where Old Brown lived in the Tale of Squirrel Nutkin and then canoe to Hawes End and walk to Skelgill and then Little Town in the Newlands Valley, to discover the home of Lucy and places associated with the Tale of Mrs Tiggywinkle, before catching the Keswick launch back to Keswick.

If you do not want to canoe, then the tour can be done by using the Keswick Launch, but this does not allow a visit to St Herbert's island.

Grade:

This journey involves some canoeing and walking so a reasonable level of fitness is required but no previous experience is necessary.

Outline Itinerary for the day:

9.30 am Meet at the Keswick Launch piers near the Theatre by the Lake, Keswick - for canoes or journey by launch.

Paddle canoes past Fawe Park and Lingholm and then land on St Herbert's island.

11.00 am Paddle to Hawes End and leave canoes.

11.30 am Walk to Littletown via Skelgill. Stop for lunch at the cafe at Littletown or have a picnic. Return to Hawes End via Yewthwaite mines, near where Mrs Tiggywinkle lived. Either canoe or catch the launch back to Keswick.

4.00 pm approx Arrive back at Keswick Launch piers
